Babies born prematurely or with other complications at birth are placed in the NICU in the hospital. The developmental clinic is designed to monitor development after the baby is discharged from the NICU. Initial assessments are completed in physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and audiology. Once initial assessments are completed, the patient is eligible to begin attending the developmental clinic.
One time each month families are given the opportunity to attend the developmental clinic. During the clinic, every family meets with our social worker and each child receives a developmental screening by occupational, speech and physical therapists. This allows our team to gauge all areas of development to ensure that early intervention can occur when needed. Parents are provided with education, training and resources during the clinic. Parents are able to ask questions and seek guidance from the therapy team. Following the screening, the therapists will make recommendations. Our team follows each child until they turn five years old.
